WHS Members Annual Meeting

Enjoy an afternoon of camaraderie and connections with fellow members at the Warwick Historical Society’s Annual Membership Meeting. Come to the Old School Baptist Meeting House at 4 pm for a report of the society, a look at the year in review, and exciting announcements about upcoming events, exhibits and important historic information. Then gather at the A.W. Buckbee Center, the headquarters of the WHS for a small reception and celebration.

This Month’s Novel: “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” was Written by Luo Guanzhong and Published 1522

Described as 70% history and 30% fiction, this novel covers the turbulent final years of the Han dynasty when China broke into three competing kingdoms, and delves into the politics of war, power, and diplomacy, causing it to be viewed not just as a great work of literature, but also as a guide for success in business and leadership.

Classic Conversations Book Club, "Treasure Island” by Robert Lewis Stevenson

December’s classic novel up for conversation is Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” a swashbuckling story of an impulsive and adventurous young boy named Jim Hawkins who comes across a treasure map. Jim embarks on a journey to try and recover the treasure, which once belonged to the famous Captain Flint. On his journey, he meets Long John Silver, a one-legged cook who ends up leading a pirate mutiny.

Beyond Jazz Concert

 

"Beyond Jazz", a flexible member musical improv group will give a concert on Sunday Dec 17 at The Buckbe Center, 2 Colonial Ave in Warwick at 4 PM.

 The ensemble spans a broad mix of musical genres creating a soundscape of luxurious sounds from jazz to rock to R&B to electronic drawing on its member varied backgrounds which ranges from classical to disco to modern jazz to blues classic R&B & dance.

 J. Brunka, Ed Littman, Steve Rubin, Rick Savage, Ian Smit and Joe Vincent Tranchina make up the core members with occasional guest artists participating.

Veteran's Day Eve Storytelling

Everyone is invited to attend an evening of camaraderie on Veteran’s Day Eve, Friday, November 10 at 7 pm at the Warwick Historical Society’s (WHS) headquarters, the A.W. Buckbee Center, 2 Colonial Avenue, Warwick.

Enjoy an evening of storytelling with WHS Trustee Mr. Thomas Brennan, a retired Navy officer and Vietnam Veteran as he welcomes retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Mr. John Ruszkiewicz. Tom and John will share stories of life in the armed services during the Vietnam War and civilian life before and after their tours. This engaging event will be relaxed and conversational, and is presented for veterans and the general public. Questions and audience interaction are encouraged. Reservations are not required, but are appreciated.

Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks and relax at an afternoon of vibrant performances, improvisational harmonizing and an eclectic set of jazz Sunday, Sept. 24 at 3 pm in Lewis Park, Main Street, Warwick.

“Beyond Jazz “ is a 6 piece improvisational ensemble without musical genre boundaries: the music happens for the first time at each performance. Each performance works up a different experience for the players and listeners.

Featuring J. Brunka, on basses, Ed Littman, guitar and effects, Steve Rubin, drums and percussion, Rick Savage, trumpet, flugelhorn and percussion, Ian Smit, guitar and effects, Joe Vincent Tranchina, keyboards.

Wine, Cheese and Jazz in Lewis Park

It’s time to sip and sample an afternoon away at the annual Wine, Cheese & Jazz event in Lewis Park on Sunday, August 20 from 4 to 6 pm. This year the WHS is happy to feature wine from One Hope Wine with Ingrid Lucas guiding our tasting, from dry to sweet, with a flavor to please every palate.

Enjoy a variety of vino, complemented with artisan cheese to balance the flavors, and soft jazz music floating on the breeze. Proceeds from the fundraiser are directly invested into the mission of the WHS, preserving, sharing and celebrating the history of the Town of Warwick since 1906.

Eleven Ladies of Warwick Historic Exhibit

Join the Warwick Historical Society at a viewing of the Eleven Ladies of Warwick, the newest historic exhibit on display in three locations: the WHS Headquarters, A.W. Buckbee Center, 2 Colonial Avenue, the Ketchum House, 26 Church Street, and the upstairs museum rooms of Baird’s Tavern, 103 Main Street on Saturday, August 19 from 12 to 3 pm.

The Eleven Ladies of Warwick is a look at art and fashion from 1760-1960, with an emphasis on some prominent women who resided in or visited Warwick through the centuries.

This exhibit has a limited viewing until September.

Thank you to the Lewis/Ford family for loaning the WHS the elegant portrait of Mrs. Elizabeth “Blee” Sanford Lewis VanLeer painted by Franklin C. Watkins, on display in the Buckbee Center.
