Warwick’s Red Umbrella Tours

Warwick, NY (WHS) – Do you know of the fire put out by snowballs? One cold winter in Warwick a fire broke out on the corner of Main Street and South Street. It was such a hard, frigid time of year that the pipes froze and water was out of reach. With frozen water surrounding the town the only way the fire could be put out was with snowballs. So the town threw snow, ice and the water around them to put out fire. The streets of Warwick are lined with history: stories and memories of the times that have formed the village we occupy now.

The man with red umbrella makes his appearance on the streets of Warwick once again to showcase the exciting history the village has to offer. For the last 25 years the frequently known “walk-abouts” have grown as the village has expanded. What once was a tour that began at the Old School Baptist Meeting House and embodied the history of the American Revolution in Warwick now brings to life the growth and prosperity that followed the 18th Century with the coming of the railroad and farming in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Take a walk with us through our local history on the third Sunday of each month beginning in August. Some of the destinations on our travels will be Baird’s Tavern, the Old School Baptist Meeting House and the Railroad Station. As we walk the streets of Warwick the history will unfold with every stop along the tour. The town will transform before your eyes as the railroad brought prosperity of new culture and ways of life to the area.

Tours will begin at 2:00pm at the A.W. Buckbee Center and end back at the center at 3:30pm. Tickets are free for members of the Warwick Historical Society and children 12 and under, non-member ticket price is $10. Tickets are also free for active military families as part of the Blue Star Museum Program. Reservations for tours are not required, but appreciated.
